Registration: 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Friday Oct 7th GW disc golf parking lot

Late Registration: 6:30-8:30 a.m. (tournament central will also be along side of GW disc golf parking lot)

Unfortunately, these tough economic times have been hard on us all. Due to lack of sponsorship support, HLRT has decided to cancel the 2nd Annual Raindrop Benefit Tournament scheduled for Sept. 12 at George Ward Park.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported us through the years, and assure you will we keep working to protect the Little River watershed!

Volunteers are needed to man the HLRT table, the food/drinks table and to float wherever need be. We'll have two shifts available with 5 volunteers per shift!

The Raindrop Art Sale will be in the side room at Rojo from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13. There will be a short live auction immediately afterward with select items up for bid.

A new friendship

Slate McDorman of the Lookout Mountain Heritage Alliance joined the April 12 board meeting of the HLRT, and gave a presentation about his group and their mission. We're very excited to meet Slate and learn about LMHA because we are both dedicated to preserving and protecting one of Alabama's most precious natural places. We hope to work with LMHA in the future to achieve our common goals, and feel this is the beginning of a wonderful friendship! Much thanks to the Alabama Rivers Alliance staff for getting us together!

The links below will take you to the current volunteer schedules for Raindrop Festival 2008.
On the schedules, each yellow square represents an open slot that needs to be filled. Every name that is in red represents a volunteer's 2nd or 3rd shift.
First priority is filling open spots, second priority is eliminating double shifts for volunteers.

Each job is broken into 2-hour time slots, and everyone who volunteers to work at least one shift gets free entry to the festival! Ideally, we'll have enough volunteers that no one works more than one shift.

We do need volunteers to help us promote and work the event, so if you're interested, please come to Bottletree on Saturday, March 1 at 3 p.m. to find out how you can help. See you there!

River protection a BIG issue in Alabama

The work of HLRT fits in with a number of organizations that are working to protect Alabama’s rivers and watersheds for recreational and scenic use, as well as for drinking water and other uses. Our state has incredible water resources and associated biodiversity. Alabama became a state in 1819 and leaders designed a state seal that features the state’s rivers, affirming their belief that the future was linked with its waterways. There is no single organization responsible for protecting all aspects of the state’s water resources, but many organizations, both large and small, take on that mission. Many are grass-roots organizations like HLRT, small but willing to give the lovers and users of the rivers a voice and a mechanism for protection.

The Little River is part of the Coosa River System. A recent press release gives preliminary information about a new Alabama Scenic River Trail that will be officially inaugurated in June 2008. This trail will be 631 miles and allow paddlers to go from Weiss Lake to Mobile Bay through the Coosa watershed. For those paddlers who paddle the Little River, a few more miles can be added at the upper end. All those who use the Little River and Coosa River System, as well as all other waterways in the state are concerned about development along sensitive banks and point-source and non-point source pollution. Sedimentation is responsible for threatening more than a few species and the scenic beauty as well.

The Hulsey Little River Trust faces many of the same issues as such organizations as Black Warrior River Keeper, Cahaba River Society, Friends of the Locust Fork, Freshwater Land Trust, and others. Our response to those issues has coalesced around the goal of actually conserving land in the watershed of an area that is so scenic that a National Preserve has been established there, but the federal land does not include all that needs to be conserved. Jacksonville State University is establishing a Field School at the National Preserve and HLRT plans to be involved in some of their efforts.

The Alabama Rivers Alliance serves as a coordinating organization that unites the many river protection organizations. Please see their website, www.alabamarivers.org, for a look at all the organizations around the state and some of the issues in which they are involved. Another great resource is www.riversofalabama.org. Some wonderful guides can be found by searching Google with the term “Citizen Guide to Alabama Rivers”. These guides have a very extensive list of related websites.

Please become informed about the issues facing all river protection groups and become a part of the solution!

Join HLRT to protect the Little River watershed!

The Hulsey Little River Trust was formed near the end of 2006 to honor the memory and carry on the environmental passion of Shane Hulsey, a local environmental educator who loved Little River Canyon. The organization is looking for new members who share a passion and/or a concern for the health of this beautiful canyon and river system.

The primary goal of the Little River Trust is to protect the watershed and view shed of the Little River as it flows through the Little River Canyon area, including areas adjacent to the National Preserve. Our mission is to preserve land used for outdoor recreational activities and create a conservation legacy for future generations. In order to carry out our mission, we are working with other organizations that have similar goals.

Our second annual Raindrop Music Festival is planned for April 25th and 26th, 2008. We look forward to seeing you there and would like to thank you in advance for your word-of- mouth support to your family, friends, and associates regarding the Trust and our future events.

Members are very important to organizations such as the Hulsey Little River Trust. The membership numbers demonstrate a grass-roots interest in the Trust’s objectives to political entities and business interests who may help or hinder the achievement of these goals. One of the main ways you can help now is to become a member and spread the word to your family, friends and associates about our organization and help us to recruit new members. Directions: From Birmingham, take I-59 North to Tallapoosa Street Exit (Tarrant), continue through Tarrant on AL Hwy 79 North for about 40-45 minutes, through Pinson, Locust Fork and then Cleveland. Just after you pass through Cleveland and head toward Blountsville, you will cross a bridge over the Locust Fork River. Just past that bridge is King’s Bend on your right. There’s a big black sign that says King’s Bend and it has a bright yellow kayak. Just follow the dirt/gravel road through the gate to your right. From Huntsville, take US 231 South through Blountsville, and look for King's Bend sign on the left, etc. From Decatur, take AL 67S to 231 through Blountsville etc. We will be waiting to welcome you!

You may or may not be familiar with Old Cahawba, the historic site near Selma that was our state's first capital. It is a fascinating archeological and historical site - and it's being threatened by development. Speak out to stop this from happening to an important piece of our Alabama heritage!

A simple way you can help is to take this online survey at the Alabama Historical Commission website.

If you have more time, please attend the stakeholder meeting that will be held on April 10, at 5:30 pm in Selma. Its purpose is to begin planning a new visitor center, and people need to speak up for Cahawba - people who appreciate it in its ruined and mysterious state, and who don't want to make it into something that it is not: a cookie-cutter, sanitized, reconstructed historic village.

Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge

What: A spectacular 5k (3.1mile) and ~10 mile trail race through the "biological heart" of Alabama's longest remaining free-flowing river, the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge

Why: to benefit the Shane Hulsey CLEAN Field Environmental Education Program of the Cahaba River Society

When: Saturday, May 19, 2007. Race begins at 8 am. The Cahaba Lilies should be in Full Bloom!

Where: Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge, near the historic town of West Blocton, Alabama.

Who: Something for everybody. Experienced trail runners will enjoy a very challenging ~10 mile course, while newcomers can get their feet wet by opting for the short and flat 3.1 mile course. Complete course descriptions and pictures available at: 5k course and 10 mile course

Registration Information

5k (3.1 Mile): $25, ~10 mile: $35 Price includes a t-shirt, a complimentary one-year membership

with the Cahaba River Society, and fully stocked aid stations. Day of Race registration is from 6:45 am – 7:30 am. Early registration is encouraged. Pick-up packets at the registration table on day of race.

Awards

Top 3 male and female for each race. Prizes donated by various outdoor gear companies.

Awards will start at approximately 11:00 am. Results will be posted ASAP on the official course website.

The support from local businesses, bands, artists, and friends has touched my heart. My number one goal for this weekend was to create some joy and make something positive and good come from the tragic loss of Shane Harper Hulsey. I think we accomplished that & I hope Shane would have been proud.
This is just the beginning! With your continued support, the Hulsey Little River Trust will continue his committment to protecting Alabama rivers and honor his legacy for many years to come.

The drawing for the magnificent large center piece bowl by Cal Breed, great friend and owner of Orbix Hot Glass, was on Saturday and the winner was Simon Hammond of Hunstville. Congratulations Simon!

Thanks to everyone who participated! This is a great start for the trust!

Don't worry if you missed this raffle, we're having another at the Raindrop Festival on Jan. 14. Raffle items include a massage, canoe trip with Cahaba River Society, a guitar, and LOTS more!

Recommendation for Little River land management

The government is currently taking comments/input from the public on the land management plan for the Little River Preserve. Their decision will determine how the land is used during the next 15-20 years.

The deadline for comments is January 8. They have outlined four plans, and we recommend Plan B. We encourage you to make your voice heard! Simply CLICK HERE to comment. You can send your own statement or copy & paste the statement below in the comment window after filling out the form.

I believe Alternative B offers the best balance for the Little River Preserve by emphasizing the preservation of the natural environment and cultural resources with minimal opportunities for facilities development, while also accommodating a diversity of uses. Alternative B provides the most area and opportunities for visitors seeking primitive trails, low-impact recreational activities, and solitude. It has the greatest potential to reduce contact between motorized and non-motorized recreational user groups. Please implement Alternative B as the land management plan for the Little River Preserve.

Little River Canyon Public Meetings - The National Park Service is seeking ideas for improving Little River Canyon National Preserve. Three open houses will be held this week to allow the public to make recommendations. Open house meetings are scheduled for:

The next land trust meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, at Rojo. Here is an incomplete agenda, in no particular order:

Raffle for Shane's land trust

Cal Breed, great friend and owner of Orbix Hot Glass, is holding a raffle to raise funds in honor of Shane. Tickets for this beautiful radiance bowl are only $5.00 each. This is a large center piece bowl. All proceeds go to Shane's land trust. This magnificent piece of art retails for $2,000.00. Cal's website is www.orbixhotglass.com and he is featured in O magazine's December issue as one of the items in "The O List". The drawing for the bowl will be on December 16. The pictures on the website are awesome but they do not do Cal's work justice. If you have an opportunity to go by the gallery in Fort Payne or one of the galleries around the country that carry his work, please prepare yourself to be amazed.

Big Ass Party - Y'all come!

Alright, here are the details for the campout on Nov. 25. In addition to a great time, this is a really important event because Amy has generously agreed to donate the profits to helping put on the Raindrop Festival, so y'all come, party, and pay as much as you can! See you there!

Details and directions below:
What: Big Ass Party - OK, a couple of changes just to make it easier on the organizers.
Camping is still $5 per person, but instead of selling beers/food at a cash bar, you will pay at the gate: $10 for a cup with unlimited beer refills (3 kegs, plus 24 cases), and $5 for all the food (burgers & hot dogs) you can eat.

So, for $20, you get camping and your fill of beer and food.
If you're short on cash, you are welcome to bring other food and BYOB, and just pay $5 to camp.

We hope this change works for everyone, and we understand that $20 might be steep for some, which is why you can bring your own and just pay $5 to camp. However, we are trying to raise money, so we hope lots and lots of you will get the whole package!

Nothing but love past the gate. All donations and proceeds go toward the Hulsey/Raindrop Festival fund.

Sweet dogs who play well with others are OK. However, if your dog is agressive at all, you will be asked to leave.
IMPORTANT: Parking is limited, and the road to the farm is a dirt, country road. We STRONGLY encourage carpooling, and trucks/SUVs are best for the road.

When: Saturday, Nov. 25, time is 4 p.m. until. Food will be ready about 6ish.

Where: Azarias Farm at 4000 Azarias Road. (Follow directions below for more exact info.)

Directions:
From Birmingham

Travel I-20/59 headed toward Atlanta. When I-20 and I-59 split, stay on I-20 toward Atlanta.

Take the Old Leeds Road exit. At the end of the exit ramp, take a left across the 2-lane.

Get in the farthest right lane, then veer right at the light onto Hwy 78.

Travel down Hwy. 78 for approximately 2.3 miles. You will pass Fabric Jungle. Go over I-459 on a slight bridge, then you will pass a brand new church (on the left) and Forest Crest Cemetary.

Proceed down the hill until you come to a blinking light. Take a left at the blinking yellow caution light onto Floyd Bradford Road. You will go approximately 2.4 miles past a little conveience store and railroad overpass.

Keep winding down the curvy road. You will pass the little white church on your right, then another church on your right, and the Lovick Holiness Church will be on your left.

Once you see Underwoood Road on your right - it has big orange blocking signs - slow down!!

Azarias Farm will be the next driveway on the right. There will be signs. The dirt road is about a mile. Proceed with caution. If you drive a car, try to ride with someone who drives a truck...it is a dirt road in the country!

So pretty much from Bham-left, right, left, right.

Turn right into the I-20 E/I-59 N entry ramp to Gadsden/Atlanta - go 3.8 mi
Take the I-20 E exit 130 to Atlanta - go 5.8 mi
Take the Old Leeds Rd exit 135 to (US-78) - go 0.2 mi
Turn left at Old Leeds Rd - go 0.2 mi
Bear right and head toward AL-4 S/US-78 E - go 232 ft
Bear right at US-78 E - go 2.3 mi
Turn left at Floyd Bradford Rd - go 2.4 mi
Arrive at 4000 Azarias Road, which as also known as 2509 Floyd Bradford
Rd.

Little River Canyon Preserve

A few people have asked if they can make a donation right now. I have set up a bank account for the Raindrop Festival and added it to my PayPal account. Any donation you make to this account will go toward putting on the festival, and whatever we don't use for the festival will be donated to the Hulseys.

Here's how to donate:
1. Go to www.paypal.com.
2. Log in. (If you don't have a PayPal account, you can set one up for free and it only takes a few minutes.)
3. Click the Send Money tab and fill out the form.

Help continue the tradition Shane and Amy Rosato started 8 years ago, and have a helluva good time, too!
Amy & Michal and Pasco are putting on a campout at their family farm in Lovick to help raise funds for Shane's family. Here's the scoop so far, more details soon:

November 25 - the Saturday after Thanksgiving
Big ass party - huge bonfire
Burgers and beer for $$$ contribution
Camping $5 or any larger donation

Calling all friends of Shane: We're putting together a fundraiser to help the Hulseys with funeral expenses, and to celebrate Shane's life. Several local bands have already signed on to play, and some local artists are going to donate artwork for an auction. If you want to get involved, come to Rojo on Saturday, Nov. 4 at noon. Shane Harper Hulsey

Shane Hulsey, husband, brother, son, and dear friend of many, died in a kayaking accident on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006. His death is a terrible tragedy and a shock to everyone as he was a very experienced whitewater guide and kayaker. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and love go out to the Hulsey family.

Shane was the environmental education director and headed the Cahaba River Society's Clean Program for many years. The Hulsey family requests that you make a donation to the Cahaba River Society's Clean Program to help continue Shane's work.
